Starting the journey with my sons / Comenzando la travesía con mis hijos

2020 was a year full of changes, for many people and my family. That year we decide to move from Puerto Rico to the United States. We arrived in Orlando, Florida where my husband has a work interview for the position of a math teacher in a Middle School. He obtain the job and we started step by step to have a car and an apartment. There was a very difficult change, but with the help of God, we could construct our life in Florida.

At this moment, my youngest child has 2 years and my oldest is 7 years. My eldest son still have enrolled in a Christian Academy in Puerto Rico, they used the ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) program to teach, since Kinder grade, he used this individual system. My eldest son has ADHD (Hyperactive and Deficit of attention), and because of that reason, this individual system work very well for him. This system gave him more liberty and support his needs.

When I move to Florida, he continued to work on his books (paces) at home until he completed the Second Grade. We have plans to enroll him in a Cristian School in Florida when the pandemic comes. The Christian School offered virtual classes and he completed the third grade. Because of his condition, the virtual classes were very difficult for him. Sit down constantly, pay attention to the teacher's instruction, and works with the student's rhythm was a challenge for him. He obtains excellent grades, but emotionally its have not been the best for him.

While I stay in my home and attend my two sons, one a pre-school and the other in virtual classes, I think that will be much better for them, that I,  a mother and a teacher teach my sons in agreement with his needs, intelligence and at his own pace. With the pandemic in the state, in the schools, my best choice is homeschooling my sons.

I know that will be saved in the school supplies expense, but also we need to invest in the educational recourses for better learning, but for my sons' welfare, try worth it. So this year I started homeschooling my sons, I change my unemployed status to a teacher, to my sons. I will be sharing my experiences, the educational resources I made, and the strategies that I use to teach my sons,  among others things.

United States History

My son loves United States History since he read stories about the U.S. presidents in his history book at virtual classes last year. That is why I decided to do extra classes about United States History, in addition to his ACE curriculum. I start with the history of the state we live in, Florida. I found the web page of Florida state and do it a simple PowerPoint presentation and worksheets about the state symbols. I use Frayer's model modify to my purpose for the lesson. I divided the lesson into three parts and do it three worksheets to work on after the lesson. I have a toddler and a 9-year-old son, because of that, I created a preschool worksheet more easily and other more difficult for my other son. You can do the same I did with the state that you live in and teach your child about that state. If you want to download the lesson for free and the worksheets for a low price, follow the weblinks: Free Florida State Symbols Lesson:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NpJm-zMz4aKZS

Cursive Writing Practice

Continued with the teaching of my eldest son with the curriculum ACE, I need to reinforce the cursive writing for the English book (PACE). During the time that I teach in Puerto Rico, I also teach de cursive writing to my students, cursive writing is a good skill to expedite the students writing. I started to created worksheets for practice and reinforce the cursive writing before he do it the book. The English book (PACE) teaches de cursive letters uppercase and lowercase separates and in alphabetic order. Honestly, I preferred that the student learn first de cursive vowels and the consonants, because, in that way, they can write words more fastened than other ways. Also is good for the students to see the relationship between the uppercase and the lowercase cursive letters. Another way to teach cursive is teaching the letters in groups with similar tracings. The most important things in learning cursive are: The student must learn the correct paces in the correct order to form the cu

Multiplication Facts Review/ Repaso de las tablas de Multiplicar

As I have told in my last post about our journey, mi eldest son works very well with ACE Curriculum (Accelerated Christian Education). Because of that we choose this curriculum to do homeschooling with him, this curriculum is very easy to use, otherwise, you don't have study education courses. Include workbooks, tests, test keys, score keys for the students to autocorrect their workbooks. Before start this curriculum, the student needs to do a Diagnostic test to assign a level, the levels are parallel to the regular grades in a school, if the student is classified in a lower grade, he can reach his actual grade on his own pace.
